"Musician" vs "Artist"

The most common mistake people make in the music industry is referring a Musician as an Artist. A “Musician” and a “Artist” are two different types of people. Not only are these two different things, but they have different meanings behind them in order from them to not be considered the same. Although their defined as the same thing in some sort of way, but there's something that one little thing that strips them apart from each other. This blog has the job of telling you what that little part is. I feel as people who listen to music on the daily basis we should know the difference between the two and this blog will finally answer that question.

Lets begin with what a Musician is and what they do. The google answer to what a musician is defined as is “a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented”. This definition is saying that you are considered to be a musician if you play a musical instrument as a profession or is musically talented. When we think of a musician in the music industry we think of a singer because growing up that was what we were taught a musician was. Well at least for me. I was also taught that a musician is not a rapper because “Rapping is not a talent”. Which is a argument I will argue about in another blog.

Now let's look into what a Artist is defined as. The google answer to what an Artist is defined as is “An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only”. Basically saying that an artist is someone who creates, practice and demonstrates art that can be in speech and academic discourse. We see artists as painters that can paint a picture physically and visually.

SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A “MUSICIAN” & “ARTIST”???

Its safe to say that Musicians are artists, but not all artists are musicians. "Artist" commonly refers to anyone who does music, visual art like painting or sculpting, or acting, but can also be used colloquially to mean anyone who is really good at what they do. However, when we talk about a specific song, we will often call the musician the "artist" instead of the "singer" or "musician." The only little thing keeping them separate is that not all artists are musicians.
