Can Music Heal

Can Music Heal? Many studies are linked to how the body, mind and soul react to different genres of music. The connection and correlation one might have with a song or artist might be more than just an enjoyable tune. Music therapy is in fact a thing and it is defined as “an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals”.  Children of all ages and adults of all ages with mental health disabilities such as learning and developmental needs can benefit from Music therapy. Music therapy works by addressing the patients needs whether it be physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological. Music Therapy as well enhances “cognitive functioning, motor skills, emotional development, social skills, and quality of life by using both active and passive music experiences such as free improvisation, song, dance, listening, and discussion of music to achieve treatment goals”  this is according to Jennifer Stephens author of Music therapy and  the education of students with severe disabilities.  According to many music therapist music is a form of bond that grows between the therapist and the client. With the music the patient is able to form a connection with the therapist while playing instruments, playing or singing a song together, etc. although music therapy can be a great way for patients of all ages to enjoy as well as learn new ways to benefit from their abilities , it just isn't for everyone. Many patients who come into music therapy dont always stay for profound treatment, it all depends of the patient and how they feel and respond to the music. Whether an interest is sparked with the first session all depends on if there will be a continuation of session, no guarantee comes with the first session everyone is different and show different interest. With music therapy many people who have trouble speaking have been able to sing. As strange as it might sound these cases are so rare often times speaking is hard for many people due to there medical conditions but can clearly and effectively sing along to a song.

  1. This blog was written to show that music is, in fact, therapeutic in ways more than just emotional. The sources are used to show the firsthand impact of music as therapy in the medical field. This made their argument that much more credible. If the author were to revise this post, I recommend focusing on putting in some visuals, links to studies, and to make it more interesting somehow. What genre of music is more therapeutic than others?
