The Dark Side Of The Music Industry

I always thought becoming an artist was easy, until I read an article called the “Video In the Machine” by Jack Banks. After reading this article, I understood that there is a dark side to the music industry. Some of the people that are mostly affected by this are new in coming artist and and those who have started their career before are affected too.  In this article, by Jack Banks explains many different forms in how music artist suffer from the music record labels and other big known companies. The first thing I read about is how many big record label companies produce videos for artist and at the end they keep most of the earnings that the video has earned by how many times it has been  reproduced. In the article of Jack Banks, he states that “new artists get only 12-14% from there royalty success and other that are more famous receive 16-18%”.  In other words, artist are getting either 12% or 18% of the money their videos or music has made, while the record labels get to keep 82%-88% of what the video has made.
Not only does the record labels take most of percentage of how much music makes, but they are very selective with the people they work with. Another way artists may have difficulties with big companies is that many of them will only sign contracts with artists if they have a "good appearance". In the article, Larry a manger of music bands explains how MTV won't show or accepts a video from an artist who is “not attractive”. He tells  how a video from Woodgoblins was not shown on MTV channel because Tad a rock guitarist from the band was "too ugly", Tad and many other have been neglected. In other words, the record labels look at you first to see if you are “fit” for them and then maybe you can  sign a contract with them, but remember with their conditions.  After these two point have you understood negative side of how these companies work? But there is still more to add on. In addition, and sadly if an artist goes and produces a video with an independent record label which is a small company that charges less for an artist to produce their music. It is very difficult for them to present their music in  big platform because for big record label companies there unknow. The article explains, the reason why many big know channels won't produce an artist's music that comes from an independent record label is because it did not come from a big know record label company.  So to be more clear, big record labels only work with big companies.
In my opinion I think it's important to talk about these things because many people who love music might not know about these issues. I also think this is an unfair treatment because artist are getting payed  small percentages for there videos and songs, and also calling them out that there not fit for the company which can cause problem in the future, such as insecurity. I also wrote about this because it is important and want to put it out there for people who might think they want to become an artist and might not really know how it work. This is a very important  and interesting topic whether or not we are an artist, want to become one, or you just enjoy listening to music because it helps us be aware of this situation that is not commonly talked about. I hope when people read this, they will value more artist’s music.
What do you think about this?

Would you still watch MTV?

  1. The main purpose of this blog entry is to understand the dark side of what happens behind the scenes in the music industry. This blog helped me understand who makes more money and who makes less money. The author used their source by establishing credibility that whatever was stated was true. Based on my opinion, it was used effectively because the articles provided insight that money is seemed to be more important, rather than producing music. If you chose to revise this post, look out for grammatical and citation errors.
Do you think you will subscribe to Spotify Premium, after reading the article you read? Also, do other major song apps, like Pandora, charge customers to listen to high-quality music?

  2. The main purpose of the entry blog is that there is a negative side to the music industry, and that record labels sign contracts with those who are better looking. Also there are small companies that make music for a lower cost while there are bigger and more noticeable companies that do the same for much more money. If artist record a video with small companies their videos or music are most likely to not come out on any famous platforms or any social media. The source was used effectively because it backed up what she stated in her post. If you choose to revise this blog post you should look out for the grammatical errors.
